  • Date picker: one of the most popular functions in a watch

Watches have performed the basic function of measuring passing time for hundreds of years. However, with the evolution of watchmaking, additional functions have emerged, one of the most popular of which is the date stamp. The date stamp is not only a practical feature, but also an indicator of the watch’s complexity and value in the watchmaking world.

    What is a date stamp?

A date picker in a watch is a function that allows you to read the current date without having to look at the calendar. It’s a practical feature that is usually located on the watch dial and can take various forms. The most common are date displays in the form of a window with numbers, where you can read the current day of the month. The classic date tracker consists of a rotating disc that changes its position, indicating successive numbers from 1 to 31. More advanced date trackers can also take into account months with different numbers of days and leap year. This is one of the most popular functions in watches, valued both for its practicality and for the aesthetic way of presenting the date on the timepiece’s dial. Among others, timepieces have it Maurice Lacroix. A watch of a luxury brand should be distinguished not only by its design, but also by its precise workmanship.

What is the design of the date stamp?

The date stamp in a watch is an extremely important feature, allowing the date to be read in real time without the need for an external calendar. The classic date stamp is constructed from a rotating disc, which is accurately graduated from 1 to 31 and placed under the dial. Different designs may place the date stamp at different positions of the dial, such as 3 o’clock or 6 o’clock, which depends on the design. The date window is usually distinguished by a contrasting or similar color to the dial to ensure legibility. One of the most original ideas was the lens introduced by Rolex in the 1950s, which improved the visibility of the numerals in the date window.

The date changer, although an additional function, does not significantly affect the watch’s gait parameters, using the energy provided by the same tension spring as the watch’s primary function. The process of changing the date can be more or less complicated, but a revolutionary development was Atlantic’s introduction of the Speedswitch system for quick correction of calendar indications in 1960. This improvement made it possible to adjust the date more quickly, which made it much easier for users to operate the date display.

It is worth remembering, however, that the use of the date disc requires certain precautions. It is advisable to avoid correcting the date between 22:00 and 03:00, when the date disc can be coupled to the gait gear, sometimes leading to damage. Watch manufacturers care about the safety of users, which is why some brands, such as Omega, deliberately delay the process of changing the date, taking care of the precision and stability of the mechanism.

Modern timepieces, such as Chopard watches, also have more complicated mechanisms, such as changing the time zone. In addition, they often allow flexible date changes. Despite the lack of quick date correction, such solutions offer full freedom to correct the date, which is appreciated by users. Manufacturers also care about securing the date picker when changing the time manually, making the whole process safe for the watch mechanism. With exclusive models, such as Audemars men’s watches, additional safety features are used to protect the date hand from accidental damage.

Watches are not only luxury gadgets, but also practical accessories that allow you to control the time and date. If you appreciate professional watchmaking, check out the watches on our website and in the showrooms in Warsaw and Poznan!
