“Seamaster” is undoubtedly one of the most popular and triumphant line of watches in the rich history of the Omega manufactory .
The brand from Biel, Switzerland, founded in 1848, like many other manufactures in the early days of wristwatches, did not produce individual models within a collection, as they do today. With advances in marketing, however, many companies began to create watch lines in their offerings, often related to the history of a particular collection or the purpose for which the watch was designed.
In 1948, when Omega celebrated its 100th anniversary, the first watch with the “Seamaster” designation on the dial was launched.
The line debuted with a model ref. 2576. The watch, with a water-resistant round case, was equipped with an automatic winding mechanism and was introduced in two versions: with a central second and a small second at six o’clock, with Chronometer markings on the dial. Both models had applied indexes and Omega logos and were offered with a leather strap.
Today, the 2576 model is highly valued and sought after by collectors: both for the fact that it began, now almost 70 years old, the history of the Seamaster model but also for the simplicity in design representing the timeless style of the Omega manufactory.
It should be added that the early models of the Seamaster line did not resemble the watches produced under this name today. We will see the difference primarily in the size of the case, which, according to the standards of the time, was 34 – 35 mm in size. In addition, stylistically the first Seamasters would be described today as rather elegant watches.
In the middle of the 20th century, however, Omega’s idea was to build a sports watch, i.e. one with a waterproof steel case and an easy-to-read dial. “Seamaster” was a response to the needs of the changing lifestyle of the brand’s customers – they needed a watch for everyday use, including sports or travel on weekends.
The “Seamaster” line has undergone many changes over the years. In 1952, a model with a date stamp debuted, and in 1966 a version of the Seamaster Cosmic was shown with a rounded case shape, in keeping with the fashion of the late 1960s. At the end of the 1960s, a Seamaster model with a chronograph function also debuted – this watch was equipped with the famous caliber 321, also known from the early models in the Speedmaster line.
A significant moment in Seamaster’s history was 1957, when the “Seamaster 300” debuted. – the first diver’s watch in Omega’s range – a model ref. 2913. In later years, the Seamaster line was often associated with diving watches. Also worth mentioning is the ProProf model, with high water resistance, serving professional divers, produced since 1970, or the famous Seamaster Diver 300 worn in movies by James Bond since 1995.

Today, nearly 70 years after its launch, the Seamaster is still one of the most important and well-recognized lines in Omega’s portfolio, and the history of the watch, which debuted in 1948, is one of the most interesting in the history of the famous manufactory based in Biel, Switzerland.
