Anyone who is interested in watches or simply likes a good quality, luxury chronometer knows the TAG Heuer brand. Today they are known for their prestige and amazing looks, but they are also respected for their extremely durable construction. However, how was it “yesterday”, i.e. in the past? Did TAG Heuer watches, as well as the brand itself, influence the design of all watchmaking? What is its connection with motor racing? We will try to answer these questions in this text – welcome.
The brand itself – which does not yet contain the prefix “TAG” – was founded in 1860, with its father and founder Edward Heuer, whose real passion was traditional stopwatches and the precise measurement of short time intervals. In a few years, Heuer secured quite a sizable number of patents – including a patent for a keyless winding system for pocket watches, a patent for the first Heuer-branded chronograph, and the well-known and still in use today adjustable pinion. The latter in particular was an important invention for Heuer, as it made his dream of more efficient and widespread stopwatch watches come true. This brought chronograph-equipped watches into production, which were much simpler to install and cheaper to make. After Edward Heuer’s death, his passion was continued by his sons, who focused on innovative technologies – the result was the introduction of a waterproof pocket chronograph case in 1895.

In 1911, the Heuer brand patented the first automotive chronograph to determine the duration of a trip. These clocks quickly appeared on the dashboards of cars, but also airplanes, while fulfilling the wishes of a huge number of drivers and pilots. This discovery increased the amount of money held by the company, leading to more research and thus the creation of the micrograph, which in 1916 was the world’s most accurate stopwatch. In 1930 and 1933, the brand continued to work with airplane pilots, which resulted in the creation of special chronographs designed for pilots and drivers called Autavia. Further mention of the brand’s ties to the automotive world dates back to 1964, when the legendary TAG Heuer Carrera watch was launched. The current owner and successor to the brand, Jack William Heuer – known for his love of racing and automobiles – created the model inspired by the story of driver Ricardo Rodriguez. He told the story of the Carrera Panamericana Mexico Road Race, a murderous race from border to border on the open roads of Mexico. This led to the creation of the TAG Heuer men’s small watch – a dedicated chronograph for professional drivers, which still reigns in the world of luxury watches today.
Of course, this is not all that can be told about the brand – this is only the “tip of the iceberg”. There is a lot more to tell – how TAG Heuer women’s watches were created, how TAG Heuer watches found their way to all the online luxury prestige watch stores, how the brand found its unique style. However, we will answer these questions another day – for today, we thank you and hope that we have at least given some insight into the history of the TAG Heuer brand.
