How to take care of a watch so that it will serve for many years?

A watch, especially a top-of-the-line watch like Omega or Rolex, is not just a precise tool that measures time. It’s a unique piece of engineering that can accompany us for a lifetime, as long as we take good care of it, of course. Today, we’ve put together some key principles that will help keep your watch in excellent condition for many years to come.

How to care for a watch? Basic rules

    • Avoid contact with chemicals: direct contact with solvents, detergents, perfumes or cosmetics can damage the watch’s bracelet, case or seals.
    • Avoid extreme temperatures: it is best not to expose the watch to rapid changes in temperature. However, the safe temperature range in which the watch works properly varies from brand to brand and model to model (usually from about -20 to +60°C). It is also worth remembering that the watch is next to the skin, so the temperature is always slightly higher.
    • Magnetic fields: although manufacturers are making sure that watches are increasingly resistant to magnetic fields, so-called magnetization of the watch can occur. This can happen, for example, after an airplane flight, under the influence of loudspeakers or induction stoves.
    • Salt water: many premium quality watches provide water resistance that even allows diving. After swimming in salt water, it’s a good idea to rinse the watch under running water to get rid of salt and other deposits.
    • Gentle care: on a daily basis, just wipe the watch with a soft microfiber cloth from time to time.
    • Leather strap: if you opt for a watch with a leather strap, it is worth taking good care of it. To keep the strap in excellent condition for as long as possible, avoid contact with water, sun exposure and oily substances.
    • Watch winding: automatic watches do not need to be wound, as long as you wear them regularly, they wind themselves, thanks to the movements of your hand in everyday activities. Traditional mechanical watches, however, require winding, usually every two days or so. Watches with a quartz mechanism do not need to be wound: it is enough to replace the battery every few years.
    • Service: it is a good idea to visit the service center at least once every 3-4 years to check the condition of the watch and maintain the mechanism.

Buying a watch of a good brand is an investment – classic models retain their value despite the passage of years. Our offer includes, among others Omega women’s watches used: efficient, well-maintained and full-value. If you maintain your watch well, you can sell it at a favorable price in the future or treat it as a family heirloom.

Common mistakes in watch maintenance: how to avoid them?

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to assume that a good watch will last for years and withstand virtually anything. Indeed, watches from premium brands are resistant to many harmful factors, and you can often dive in them, play sports, go out in extreme weather conditions. Nevertheless, if you are already investing in Rolex men’s watches or any other good brand, it is worth treating them as an investment and taking care of their technical condition.

A common mistake is to give a high-end watch to a random watchmaker. On the manufacturer’s website you can find points where qualified, certified specialists work. Watches very often have additional functions, such as a date or chronograph, so their mechanisms are quite complicated – incompetent service and maintenance can do more harm than good.

It is also important to read the instruction manual. It sounds trivial, but many people don’t feel the need to find out exactly how to wind the watch, set the date or use the chronometer. Otherwise, you can even damage the mechanism. In the case of premium brands, such as Longines watches, when in doubt, it’s worth visiting the manufacturer’s website: if you type in a specific watch model, you can find instructions on how to operate and maintain the watch.
