  • Quartz or mechanical: which mechanism to choose?

Choosing the right watch is not only a matter of aesthetics, but also of technical details that affect its functionality and precision. One of the most important aspects to consider is the type of mechanism – quartz or mechanical. Each of them has its own unique features, advantages and disadvantages that can influence the decision to buy. In this article, we will take a closer look at both types of mechanisms to help you decide which one will best meet your expectations and needs.

Mechanical watches: the classics where it all started

Mechanical watches are true classics of watchmaking, with which the history of precise timekeeping began. Their operation is based on a complex gear system, driven by energy stored in a spring, which is gradually released to drive the movement of the hands. The process begins with a tension – manual, when the wearer winds the watch himself, or automatic, when the mechanism uses wrist movement. The energy stored in the spring is transferred through the drive and gait gears to the catch, which acts as a transmitter of energy pulses to the regulator, usually in the form of a balance wheel. It is the regulator that is responsible for precise timing, stopping and releasing the gears at equal intervals. Despite the so-called quartz revolution, many luxury brands still produce mechanical timepieces – an example of this is the Rolex watch. Despite their complex design and need for regular maintenance, mechanical watches are prized for their reliability, elegance and unique traditional character, which combines the art of watchmaking with engineering precision.

    A newer solution: quartz mechanisms

A newer development in the world of watchmaking is quartz mechanisms, which revolutionized the watch market in the 1970s. A quartz mechanism works on a completely different principle than a traditional mechanical mechanism. Instead of a spring and a complicated gear system, the heart of a quartz watch is a quartz crystal powered by a battery. Energy from the battery makes the crystal vibrate at a constant frequency of 32,768 times per second, and these vibrations are converted into electrical pulses by an integrated circuit. Each pulse moves the seconds hand by one step, which ensures incredible precision – time deviations are only a few seconds per month. The simple design, low production cost and minimal need for maintenance meant that quartz watches quickly became popular, displacing traditional mechanical models. Today they are prized for their accuracy and convenience, and their additional features, such as EOL (End of Life) technology that informs of low battery levels, make them even more practical. Their popularity is greatest in brands that produce cheaper watches on a mass scale. However, quartz models can also be found in the offerings of brands with traditions, such as Baume & Mercier.

Quartz or mechanical: which to choose?

The choice between quartz and mechanical watches depends on the individual needs and preferences of the wearer. Quartz watches, powered by a battery, are characterized by high precision – their deviations are only a few seconds per month. They are less susceptible to external interference and require minimal maintenance, making them a practical choice for those who value reliability and convenience.
In contrast, mechanical watches, although less accurate (from -5 to +30 seconds per day), offer something that quartz models cannot – unique craftsmanship and prestige. Each mechanical watch is a small work of art, requiring regular attention and service, which for many wearers is what makes it uniquely valuable. These mechanisms, especially in models from renowned manufactures, are appreciated for their history and tradition, which makes wearing such a watch not only a measurement of time, but also an expression of style and class. Many well-known brands have both quartz and mechanical timepieces, such as. Hublot. Watch mechanical, in an era of digital timepieces, is often an escape from the daily routine and a way to stand out. The final choice depends on whether you prioritize functionality and precision or your passion for tradition and craftsmanship.
