  • Water resistance of watches: what are the classes, what to pay attention to?

In today’s globalized society, watches are no longer just a tool for timekeeping, but have also become an expression of our lifestyle, taste and a complement to our styling. With advances in technology, watches have become more advanced, offering a variety of functions, such as timekeeping, activity monitoring and even GPS navigation. However, one of the key features to consider when choosing a watch is its water resistance. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the different water resistance classes of watches and what to look for when buying to make sure our watch meets our expectations and needs.

Water resistance of the watch: basic information

Water resistance of a watch is an important factor to consider when choosing the right model. This term refers to the degree to which the case of the watch is protected from water entering it. Water resistance grades are determined by tests that assess how resistant the watch is to water ingress under various conditions. The most common term is WR (Water Resistant), which is expressed in bars (bar), atmospheres (atm), or meters and/or feet (feet). There are different water resistance ratings, and understanding what they mean is key to ensuring that our watch will be adequately protected during exposure to water. However, it’s always worth checking the manufacturer’s information, as for example. Rolex watch Oyster is waterproof to a minimum depth of 100 meters, but others may already be less resistant.

    Water resistance classes of watches

The water resistance class of a watch, expressed by the corresponding numeral, is a key indicator of its water resistance. The most common designations are 30, 50, 100, 150, 200, 300 and higher, which correspond to static pressure values in meters or atmospheres (e.g. 30m/WR30/3ATM/3Bar). This designation guarantees that, under laboratory conditions, the watch case will not allow water to enter up to a given static pressure value. Watch manufacturers, based on the water resistance rating, also specify the recommended level of contact between the watch and water. For example, watches with a WR30 designation are designed for accidental contact with water, such as when washing hands. Watches with a WR50 designation allow for brief immersion in water, such as in a bathtub, and some reputable manufacturers do not even rule out swimming on the surface of the water without jumping into it. On the other hand, watches with the WR100 designation allow swimming in water and snorkeling with a mask and snorkel, without oxygen cylinders or an aqualung. On the other hand, watches with a WR200 designation allow swimming and diving with an aqualung. This is key information to consider when choosing a watch, especially if you plan to wear it in various water-related situations. Such watches are available from, among others Patek-Philippe.

Watch water resistance vs. timepiece functions?

The water resistance of a watch is a key factor to consider when choosing a timepiece, especially if you intend to use it in water-related situations. The pyramid of watches ranks a number of luxury brands, but they differ not only in terms of complications, but also water resistance.

Nevertheless, there is an important link between water resistance and timepiece functions. Note that a watch may be water resistant to a certain depth, but not necessarily all of its functions can be used underwater. Buttons, such as the stopwatch, calendar or crown of the case, can be particularly susceptible to flooding with water if used while submerged. That’s why it’s important to always read the instruction manual for a particular watch, where you’ll find information on its water resistance and the manufacturer’s recommendations for contact with water.

Special care should be taken to avoid manipulating the buttons under water, unless the manufacturer specifically recommends their use under such conditions and specifies this in the instructions. Following these recommendations can prevent damage to the watch and keep its water resistance at an appropriate level.
